River Taxi and Wat Arun (aka "Temple of Dawn")

Joe and I went with my friend Frieda on a river taxi up the Chao Phraya River.  We wanted to take it to the end but once we had been on it for a good hour and were at stop 22 we decided to turn around and go back as we weren't sure how far it goes.  We later found out that it goes up to stop 30.  You pay 13 Baht ($0.38) to ride it each time you get on it.  On our way back we paid the same and we stopped at Exit 10 and had lunch.  We then got off at Exit 8 and then took a river ferry across to the other side for 3 Baht ($0.08) and visited Wat Arun (aka the "Temple of Dawn").  Here I was approached by a monk asking if I spoke English.  I responded yes and then he asked Joe and I if we had 10 minutes to answer some questions.  He explained that they were studying English and needed to practice with people.  So Joe and I were invited into the temple with the monks to sit down and get interviewed while another monk video taped it.  We were asked questions about what sports we like, what we like about Thailand etc.  The monks were very nice.  Sometimes if they did not understand the English I would answer them in Thai and they did not like this - they said NO THAI.  Later on they asked me about my Thai and how I knew Thai and how long I had been studying it and where I was taking it.  They said I spoke it very well.  Below are some pictures from our day.  Enjoy!

A monk waiting for the river taxi.

A temple along the river (maybe Wat Pho?)

Wat Arun as seen from the river.

Another temple....

This picture was taken on the river taxi.  If you look closely the sign above the monks heads reads "Space for Monks."  I watched a Westerner get scolded by a Thai for standing in that space.  The man was really rude.  Then a few minutes later the monks invited Joe over to talk with them.  Joe made some new friends - they even requested to have their picture taken with Joe.

Joe and his new Monk friends.  One was named Sanjrit and I have no clue as to the other guys name - it was a traditional LONG Thai name.

Walking thru the markets at Exit 10 to go eat lunch.

Sweet and Sour fish (I forget which fish it was though).

Greens - believe morning glory and something else - oh and also mushrooms.

Yummm - Garlic River Prawns

This street vendor was all smiles when we started taking his picture.

Dried squid - you think they got enough?

Egg rolls!!!

Grilled bananas - these are everywhere!

On board the river taxi...

The temple at Wat Arun

An interesting statue around the temple grounds.

One of the guards of the temple...

And the second guard.....

Some buddha's at the temple...

Many interesting statues...

Joe and I inside the temple being interviewed by the monk.

Wat Arun

I think he has had too much sun - he is peeling!

Frieda climbing the steep stairs up Wat Arun - this was quite a workout!

The next set of stairs requires both hands for climbing.  This is Frieda again and I am behind her in the red shirt.

This is me - I am almost to the top and nearly out of breath and about to lose my knees!

Wat Arun - very pretty!

More dried fish.....

And more....

Storm Pictures

As Thai's say, fon dtot tuk wan!  It rains/storms here every day.  Well, almost every day.  The storms are quite fierce as is the wind and the rain.  Joe's favorite thing to do now is try to take pictures of the lightening when it storms.  These pictures were all taken from our apartment which is on the 10th floor of a 25 story building in downtown Bangkok.  Please Enjoy!!!

OTOP Fair

It seems like every weekend there is some sort of fair at any of the number of convention centers in town.  They have gem shows, local crafts and various items made throughout the different villages in Thailand.  One weekend in late August, Joe and I went with our friend Jane to the OTOP Fair and managed to do some Christmas and Birthday shopping there!  Enjoy the pics!

I could not resist a picture of a mannequin.  These mannequins are all over Thailand in ALL the stores.  I am not sure who thought they were good looking and started using them!

You can own your very own monk in a box - looks so real it is creepy!

Watch out Texas......you may have some competition!  Here is a Thai Cowboy!

A view of the fair...

Another view....

A beautiful boat........we took a pic of this one for you Alex!

These were kids hats and we thought they were a little creepy looking - especially the ones that had eyes!

Durian Fruit aka "King of the Fruits" in Asia

The fruit looks similar to a pineapple with a thorny husk.  There is a mushy edible flesh around a seed which emits a strong and penetrating odor even when intact but even more so once you remove the husk.  The fruits foul, overpowering and offensive odor has resulted in the fruits banishment from public transportation and hotels.  Even the weird food guy will not eat it.  But Joe and I decided to try it out.  It is a fruit so how bad can it really be?  Well imagine taking bananas, nuts and onions and pureeing them together and then eating it - that is the only way I can think to describe it.  I mean it was not so disgusting that I would not recommend you try it, but now that I have tried it, I am not sure I'd be running out dying to get some more.  The other food on our plate is chicken schwarma from our favorite Lebanese restaurant in town!

China Town Walking Tour

In August I went on a photography walking tour of China Town with the American Women's Club (AWC).  They do these tours about once a month or so.  It's a great opportunity to get a lot of neat photos.  Enjoy!

Some sort of fish over a grill.....

The Queen Mother of Thailand - her picture is all over the place in Bangkok!

A buried truck - what a sight to see - and this was not the ONLY one - there were more!

An adorable little girl who was hamming it up for the camera!

OK now this was not taken on purpose.  I was trying to take his picture while making these decorations (not sure what they are) and due to the delay on the camera, I ended up getting him picking his nose instead - gotta love it!

This is how they wash dishes here...

Mmmmmm yummy fish!

And some raw fish...

This lady was a trip - she was hamming it up for the camera more than the little girl in the previous picture!

Chinese Mooncakes...

Can you imagine sitting in that squatting position working all day?  That is how they do it here!  I know I couldn't do it!

I thought this was interesting....

This poor parrot - he is nearly naked of all his feathers.  He was a sight to see and would jump up and down and bop around.

A monk...

Orange monk robes air drying....

An old singer sewing machine....

Anyone need some eggs?

A lady at a temple....

A shot of the temple.....

A shot down the main drag of china town.....
